I wish I had more time to read.
I’m sure you’ve all seen this clip by now, but it’s so amusing to me that I want to share it here anyway.
What kind of a reaction is that, Doris Lessing? You just won the !@#* Nobel Prize! Get excited!
When May and I win the Nobel Prize, I’m going to pee myself, because a) the academy will have totally and completely lost its marbles, and b) well… answer a pretty much says it all. But still, at least I’d be excited.
In between the books I’m supposed to be reading, and the books I’m reading even though I’m not supposed to be reading them, I’ve found time to read about half of Amy Grant’s new book Mosaic. It’s really quite beautiful, even though I was really hoping for dishy details about the divorce and haven’t come across any yet. I can totally understand why she’d choose not to write about that, though I wanted to raise my fist in support of her. Still, I guess I can do that anyway. Go Amy.
My friend Beth is actually having dinner with Amy Grant right now. It’s not just her and Amy, but she is in a small enough group that I’m dying that she gets to meet her. I doubt there's even one person in that group who knew and loved Amy Grant way back when. Life is so unfair. And Beth has quite enjoyed rubbing it in. Thanks for thinking of me, Beth (mumbling under my breath).
She actually refused to tell me where they were eating, fearing I would camp out outside and do something crazy (like... ask for an autograph? I don't know what she was afraid of exactly...). Anyway, I have much more important things to do, thankyouverymuch, like get startd on Dolly Parton's autobiography, so there. That Greatest Hits CD you promised me hasn’t arrived yet, FYI.
I’ve also found a spare moment to dip into Stephen Colbert’s new book I Am America and So Can You , and even found it in my heart to sign his petition to save Oprah’s book club by featuring him on it. If you don’t watch his show, you should check it out (we watch it for free online, so not having cable is no excuse). He’s a total spaz and I find it hilariously refreshing.
Check out Annie The Superfast Reader’s site for an excellent look at East of Eden, which dedicated blog readers will recognize as one of my favorite books. East of Eden is a flawed book, but it’s my favorite Steinbeck work. Still, The Grapes of Wrath is gorgeous and his best and I am totally jealous that she gets to read it for the first time.
I’m also reading a book about jeans. It’s fascinating. I’ll share more about that later. For now, I’ll just say, is it any wonder I’m not getting my work done? There are too many good books to read. Does anyone else have this problem??

I laughed for about 10 minutes straight while at work when I first read about her response to winning. You gotta love it.
This Doris Lessing video is amazing.
And you know, I love to read, but I'm a very slow reader so I don't really have a problem with being tempted away from my work by books. I love to read, don't get me wrong, but I take my time, linger over every syllable, so I'm usually only working on one book at a time and I know it will take me a while.
That's my secret confession of the day!
I am totally with you, Anne. I'm still working on my English undergrad (low-res MFA is my next goal) and I am constantly fighting myself about which book to pick up! War Lit is kicking my tail (The Thin Red Line this week), but it gave me my first excuse to read Steinbeck (The Moon is Down) and I am hooked. He is so warm and subtle. Loved it.
I have this problem ALL THE TIME. So many good books - and yet there are other things I have to do (and other books I have to read).
I actually hadn't seen that clip yet. What a non-reaction. I would've either fainted or totally gone postal!
It's actually quite refreshing to see someone not be all hyped up about winning something. But Anne, I'm like you...when I win a Nobel Prize I'm gonna bust out the dance moves like a scene from High School Musical. "What time is it? Time of our lives, anticipation."
Some people are compulsive shoppers...I'm a compulsive library-book-checker-outer. Vegas allows 50 items checked out - I am maintaining about 35ish. Needless to say, loads of those books never get read. Last night I checked out The Book of Jane, and just finished it! Thanks for a great day of reading!
No video showed up. Bummer. I'm so going to google it.
Oh and Anne, when you win that prize I hope you won't forget us (I'll send Depends, because I care :)
Amy's Mosaic book was wonderful. I read through it in about 4 hours yesterday. It was like sitting down for tea with an old friend. She's been my favorite since 1980..not a day has gone by that I haven't either listened to her music or sung a song of hers. LOVE Amy.
I'm wishing Beth would have let you tag along to dinner too!
I actually hadn't seen that video. Hey, who knows? The Brits have some pretty weird slang & maybe that's the hip groovy cool Brit way of saying "Yipeee!!" (Or not...)
